Live translation, the Ray-Ban spectacles, the new Meta AI software, and more. What you need to know about Meta’s AI plays is provided here.
All of Meta’s messaging and social networking applications incorporate AI. It’s likely that you use at least one of Meta’s top four social networking and messaging applications on a daily basis, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger. And you have undoubtedly encountered Meta AI if you do.
Artificial intelligence has been integrated into the way you use these applications by the tech giant, including assisting with image editing and posting. Here are some facts concerning the AI tools offered by the social media corporation.
Meta AI: What is it?
Meta is working to provide a multimodal, multilingual AI assistant that can manage challenging jobs, going beyond a simple AI chatbot.
With free, limitless access to its AI models integrated within Meta’s app family, the business hopes to establish Meta AI as your go-to personal virtual assistant.
Meta AI also refers to Meta’s academic research lab in addition to its application in apps. Prior to its October 2021 renaming to Meta, it was known as Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research. It produces AI technology to power anything from chatbots to virtual reality and augmented reality experiences, and it focuses on the metaverse, hence the name Meta.
Comparing Meta AI with other chatbots
There are more competitors in the race to incorporate AI into daily life besides Meta AI. Gemini, a free chatbot similar to ChatGPT, and Google Assistant are examples of Google’s own technologies.
While Meta AI is integrated into your social interactions and provides help without you having to ask, Google’s AI is primarily focused on productivity, such as managing calendars or search results. You can take a picture using Meta AI and ask it to recognize certain aspects or make changes to the picture when you want it to.
Similar to Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, these assistants focus on tasks, whereas ChatGPT or Snapchat’s My AI facilitate communication.
To make it the “everyday experience,” as opposed to being a standalone tool, Meta AI goes one step further and combines all of those elements. Therefore, Meta AI subtly influences how you interact with people or produce content, but those other utility technologies feel more like something you use intentionally. (However, in response to speculation, Meta released a new standalone app for Meta AI last week that allows you to talk, search, and pose inquiries.)
Because it blends in so well with the social media sites that people use on a daily basis, AI technologies are more difficult to avoid. You may ask Meta AI to provide ideas, respond to inquiries, or alter photos in conversations (including group chats) by just entering “@” followed by Meta AI.
The search features in Meta’s applications are also enhanced by this AI integration, which makes it simpler and more natural to look for material and research subjects based on what you see in your feed—what Meta refers to as a “contextual experience.”
Meta AI now offers natural voice chats, following in ChatGPT’s footsteps. English, French, German, Hindi, Hindi-Romanized script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish are among its many languages. Awkwafina, Kristen Bell, and John Cena are just a few of the famous voices you may select for the helper.
There are presently 21 non-US nations where Meta AI is accessible: Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Malawi, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Australia, and Cameroon.
The business claims it may eventually join the EU’s AI Pact, despite the fact that Meta AI is not yet accessible in the EU. Because of its past data privacy disputes, Meta has been reluctant to comply with the AI Act’s mandate that businesses submit “detailed summaries” of the data used to train their models.
The AI glasses of Meta
Commonplace items like its Ray-Ban Meta eyewear are incorporating Meta AI. One of the many ways these glasses may help you is by helping you remember where you parked your car (yeah!).
The voice command “Hey Meta, start live AI” will be available starting this summer, allowing you to provide Meta AI with a real-time view of whatever is visible via your glasses. Depending on what you’re looking at, the glasses can also do things. For instance, you may ask AI to scan a QR code or place a call on your behalf.
English, French, Italian, and Spanish are among the languages that may be automatically translated by using the voice command “Hey Meta, start live translation” with your Meta Ray-Bans. The main method for pairing and controlling your Ray-Ban smart glasses is now the AI app from Meta.
Other products include Orion, its holographic AR glasses prototype that has been in development for more than ten years, and the Meta Quest S3 version of its standalone virtual reality headset, which is now referred to as a mixed reality headset following the improvements.
Only the US and Canada presently provide Meta AI on Quest devices, despite the fact that Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Quest smartphones are sold in 15 countries, including several European ones.
Additionally, Meta and Oakley are collaborating on a pair of smart glasses that will be available for preorder starting Friday. The special limited-edition model will cost $499. “Later in the summer” will see the release of those, with additional models beginning at $399.
The AI Studio at Meta
This functionality is currently limited to the United States. Custom AI chatbots may be made by users and companies without requiring a deep understanding of programming. By acting as extensions of themselves or their companies, these so-called AI characters will facilitate more interesting encounters with fans or clients. All AI-generated responses will be clearly identified as such.
The force driving Meta AI is Llama.
The LLMs of the Llama (Large Language Model Meta AI) family are made to comprehend and produce prose that is similar to that of a person, as well as to write, respond to queries, and even have conversations.
The most recent version of this LLM is LLM 3.3. It packed more power into a smaller package when it was released in December 2024. It refers to “an instruction-tuned model.”
“Llama 3.3 is a text-only 70B instruction-tuned model that provides enhanced performance relative to Llama 3.1 70B – and relative to Llama 3.2 90B when used for text-only applications,” Meta said in its release notes.
There are 70B parameters available for the text-only Llama 3.3 model. Measured in billions, parameters specify how the model interprets inputs, such as words or pictures, and modifies the connections between them to produce outputs.
Additionally, Meta intends to provide models with reduced characteristics that are tailored for wearable technology, such as glasses, and mobile devices.
